Benue PDP Set to Challenge Court Ruling, Vows to Reclaim Governorship Mandate

The Benue State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its determination to exhaust all legal avenues in its pursuit to reclaim the governorship of the state, which it insists is rightfully theirs.

Following the dismissal of the appeal by PDP’s governorship candidate, Engr Titus Uba, by the Appeal Court sitting in Abuja on Monday, and the affirmation of Gov Hyacinth Alia of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the March 18 election, the party has affirmed its resolve to challenge this ruling at the Supreme Court.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the party’s spokesman, Mr Bemgba Iortyom, maintained that the last election was won by Engr Uba. He stated that the party would instruct their legal team to contest the Appeal Court’s ruling at the Supreme Court.

Mr Iortyom emphasized, “It remains the contention of the party that, in compliance with prevailing electoral laws, regulations, and guidelines, Engr. Uba emerged as the rightful winner of the state’s governorship in the last election. This was argued by his legal team at the Tribunal and the recently decided appeal.”

He added, “The party’s leadership will engage in consultations with the legal team to determine the best course of action for the next steps in the litigation process. The party urges its numerous members and supporters to maintain faith that justice will prevail in the petition by Engr. Titus Uba.”

“The PDP firmly believes that democracy is best upheld and the integrity of the electorate’s votes safeguarded through the pursuit of legal recourse whenever there are breaches of the electoral process, as evidenced by the APC in the 2023 Governorship Election,” Mr Iortyom concluded.
