Former Minister Advocates for Legalizing Sex Work in Zimbabwe to Protect Workers

Ex-Cabinet Minister Nyasha Chikwinya has called for the urgent consideration of legalizing sex work in Zimbabwe as a viable solution to the myriad issues plaguing the profession. This plea comes amidst the global recognition, by organizations such as UNAIDS, of the detrimental impact of criminalizing sex work in over 103 countries, including Zimbabwe.

The ongoing criminalization of sex work has left sex workers vulnerable to various human rights abuses, as highlighted in studies showing the prevalence of violence and HIV among this demographic. With an estimated HIV prevalence of 42.2% among sex workers, the urgent need for legal protection and access to healthcare becomes increasingly evident.

Despite the challenges faced by sex workers, including stigma and lack of privacy in accessing healthcare services, there is a growing call for policymakers to address these issues with the necessary urgency.

Speaking at an Economic Justice Women Project (EJWP) stakeholder’s engagement meeting, Nyasha Chikwinya emphasized the need to confront the reality of sex work and to advocate for its legalization as a means of safeguarding workers from the pervasive abuses they endure. She further highlighted the role of sex workers in preserving marriages, underscoring the societal significance of their profession.

Supporting the call for legalization, Goromonzi West legislator Beatrice Nyamupinga asserted that legalizing sex work is crucial in eliminating the problems associated with the clandestine nature of the sex industry. Nyamupinga emphasized the valuable contributions of sex workers to the development of her constituency, further strengthening the argument for initiating a robust debate on the legalization of this trade.

In addition, Margaret Mutsamvi, the executive director of EJWP, seized the opportunity to advocate for addressing the challenges faced by women in the informal sector, emphasizing the need for lawmakers to take significant steps towards supporting this marginalized demographic.

This clarion call for the legalization of sex work in Zimbabwe marks a pivotal moment in addressing the longstanding issues faced by sex workers, advocating for their protection, and recognizing their valuable contributions to society.
