Men’s Mental Health: More Men in Africa Are Committing Suicide Than Women, Says CDC

Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisor on Non-communicable Diseases, Injuries, and Mental Health, Dr. Naeem Dalal, disclosed that the number of men committing suicide in Africa surpasses that of women.

Speaking at the International Conference on Public Health in Africa held in Lusaka, Zambia, Dr. Dalal emphasized the urgency of addressing cultural stigmas that hinder African men from seeking mental and emotional support.

According to Dr. Dalal, it is crucial to dismantle these cultural stereotypes, considering the statistics that indicate a higher rate of suicide deaths among men across the African continent.

He articulated, “There is a higher incidence of active suicide among men. When we discuss suicide, we must comprehend the distinction between passive and active forms.”
