In a groundbreaking announcement, President William Ruto declared that Kenya is set to become a visa-free destination from January 2024. The revelation took place as the country marked the 60th Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nairobi’s Uhuru Gardens. Ruto emphasized that Kenya, known as the birthplace of humanity, is unwavering in its commitment to welcoming all visitors.
“Kenya is the cradle of humanity, a scientific fact that fills us with pride and underscores our rich heritage,” Ruto proudly asserted. “It is with great pleasure, as President of this extraordinary country, to make a historic announcement of the decision of the Government of Kenya. Kenya will be a visa-free country.”
The President’s address further conveyed that the Government of Kenya aims to eliminate the burden of visa applications for individuals from all parts of the world. “To echo the call of the Turkana people to the world: ‘Tobong’u Lorre!’ – a simple message to humanity: Welcome home! This is why the Government has abolished the requirement of visas for all our visitors,” he articulated with conviction.
Kenya has, in preparation for this significant move, established a digital platform designed to identify and vet travelers in advance. As a result, all visitors to Kenya will be required to obtain electronic travel authorization as they plan their trips.
If this initiative comes to fruition, Kenya will join Rwanda as the second country in Africa to open its borders by eliminating visa requirements for all Africans. President Ruto has been a vocal advocate for a borderless continent, asserting that the prosperity of African States continues to be impeded by existing borders, which hinder the free movement of goods and people.
Recently, on December 9, President Ruto urged African governments to address trade barriers that obstruct youth entrepreneurship. He emphasized that by fostering a conducive environment for entrepreneurship, Africa will be able to expand opportunities for its youth and transform their ideas into thriving cross-border businesses.
Ruto stressed the need for African governments to provide young people with access to capital, mentorship, and opportunities. “This can be achieved by simplifying business regulations, facilitating access to finance, and promoting regional economic integration,” he expressed during the official opening of the Youth Connekt Africa summit held in Nairobi.
President Ruto also affirmed Kenya’s support for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which aims to create a borderless market for African businesses, fostering an environment of growth and collaboration across the continent.
