Tracing Begins as Diphtheria Claims the Lives of Four Children in Nasarawa

The Nasarawa State Government has sprung into action after the heartbreaking loss of four young lives to diphtheria. In response, the state has initiated the vital process of tracing and treating children who may have come into contact with the deceased.

Ishaya Amegwa, the State Health Educator, made this announcement during the State Social Mobilisation Technical Working Group meeting in Lafia, the state capital. The gravity of the situation was underscored by Amegwa’s revelation that the state government is collaborating with the World Health Organization in its efforts.

He fervently appealed to parents and guardians, urging them to ensure that their children receive routine immunizations. This proactive measure is paramount in safeguarding the health of the state’s children, providing crucial protection against preventable diseases.

Amegwa emphasized, “The Nasarawa State Government, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation, has commenced the essential task of tracing and providing preventive medication to children affected by the disease.”

Moreover, in light of the circulation of a mutant poliovirus in neighboring Plateau and Kaduna states, the Nasarawa state administration has implemented stringent measures to forestall the emergence of an epidemic.

As a part of a concerted effort, Amegwa implored members of the Technical Working Group to elevate their engagement in fostering public awareness on prevailing health concerns, thereby instigating behavioral modifications within the community. This group notably comprises officials from the State Ministry of Education, the media, and an interfaith forum, exemplifying a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to tackling health challenges.

The proactive response by the Nasarawa State Government, in collaboration with international health organizations, underscores a dedication to the well-being of its citizens. Through heightened awareness and preventive measures, the state is determined to avert the spread of diphtheria and other potential health threats, embodying a resolute commitment to public health.
