Yobe State Local Government Elections Rescheduled for May 25, 2024

The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YBSIEC) has made a significant announcement, rescheduling the date for the much-anticipated local government election to May 25, 2024. This decision comes as a pivotal development following the initial slated date of November 25, 2023, as reported by Media Talk Africa.

During a stakeholders’ meeting in Damaturu, Dr. Mamman Mohammed, the Executive Chairman of YBSIEC, unveiled this crucial update. He disclosed that Governor Mai Mala Buni had granted approval for the election date, which will see the selection of 17 Chairmen and 178 Councilors across the local government council in Yobe State.

Dr. Mamman Mohammed emphasized that this decision aligns with the provisions of section 197 of the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended. Furthermore, registered political parties in the state will receive election guidelines to facilitate the nomination of suitable candidates, thereby fostering good governance at the grassroots level.

In his address, Mohammed urged his team and electoral officers to redouble their efforts to ensure the smooth and successful conduct of the elections. He emphasized, “The State Independent Electoral Commission will take full responsibility for overseeing, organizing, and supervising the local government council election, all of which shall be conducted in a manner that is free, fair, credible, and peaceful.”

Significantly, Mohammed underscored that all eligible residents of Yobe are encouraged to vie for councillorship and chairmanship roles, provided they meet the age criteria of 25 and 30, respectively. He emphasized that there will be no gender bias, and candidates must fulfill additional criteria, including sound mental health, financial solvency, and successful completion of security screening.

This rescheduling of the local government elections in Yobe State marks a crucial turning point, heralding a renewed opportunity for political participation and the consolidation of democratic governance at the grassroots level. As the state prepares for this landmark electoral process, all eyes are on YBSIEC to deliver an election that upholds the principles of transparency, inclusivity, and integrity.
