The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has embarked on a mission to solidify its role as the chief telecom regulator in Nigeria, with transparency as the linchpin of its strategy. Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, affirmed that embracing transparency will lay the foundation for a resilient, accountable, and efficient institution. In a recent visit to the Hon. Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, Dr. Maida outlined his vision and strategies, emphasizing the pivotal role of transparency in the commission’s operations.

“Transparency is key. It is by transparency that we can self-regulate even as regulators. And by so doing, we would be putting ourselves on our toes, which in the long run will drive the Commission forward to achieve our goals of operational excellence,” asserted Dr. Maida.

Dr. Maida lauded the minister for exemplifying transparency in leadership, acknowledging it as a catalyst for transforming the industry into a more accountable and people-oriented sector. He conveyed his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting him with the responsibility of spearheading this critical sector of the economy.

In his engagement with the Minister, Dr. Maida shared his strategic priorities, aligned with the 5-Pillars of the Strategic Plan unveiled by the Ministry. These encompass a comprehensive review of the industry, with a keen focus on Quality of Experience and broadband connectivity. Notably, he stressed the non-negotiable stance on Quality of Experience, emphasizing the Commission’s commitment to ensuring compliance and setting stringent standards.

Furthermore, Dr. Maida underscored the pivotal role of broadband connectivity as the primary enabler of the digital economy and financial inclusion. Aligning with the Ministry’s agenda, he highlighted the need to harness the potential of technological innovations such as the 5G revolution to foster industry growth and bolster connectivity.

In parallel, the NCC CEO emphasized the ongoing review of internal processes to enhance efficiency and responsiveness, including the digitization of operations. This transformational approach aims to optimize regulatory activities, with the overarching goal of attracting increased investment, fostering economic growth, and generating employment opportunities within the telecommunications industry.

Reflecting on his visit to the Digital Bridge Institute in Lagos, Dr. Maida expressed a commitment to revitalizing the institute in alignment with the “Knowledge Pillar” of the Ministry’s Strategic Plan. This initiative aims to harness the institute’s potential as a key driver of a knowledge-based economy.

Welcoming the NCC boss, Dr. Tijani acknowledged the pivotal role of the telecom regulator in realizing the nation’s digital aspirations. He affirmed a strong partnership with NCC, emphasizing the need to leverage the existing quality to create enhanced value for the country.

The convergence of these strategic priorities underscores the NCC’s unwavering commitment to fostering a transparent, accountable, and resilient telecom industry in Nigeria, resonating with stakeholders, investors, and consumers as it strives for operational excellence.
