Rivers State Political Crisis: Former Presidential Aide Laments Nyesom Wike’s Leadership

A former presidential aide, Laolu Akande, has expressed his dismay with the conduct of the immediate past Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike. Akande, who served as the spokesperson to former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, expressed bewilderment at Wike’s apparent inability to effectively manage his anointed successor as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

The political turmoil in Rivers State has escalated this week with the demolition of the State House of Assembly Complex and the defection of 27 members of the assembly loyal to Wike to the All Progressives Congress (APC). These events unfolded despite the intervention of President Bola Tinubu who sought to mediate peace between Wike and his godson, Governor Fubara.

In a recent interview on Channels Television, Akande lamented the state of affairs in Rivers State, expressing his disappointment with Wike’s leadership. He highlighted Wike’s previous reputation as a decisive leader, often referred to as “Mr. Project,” and underscored his prominent political stature in Nigeria, ranking second only to the President in terms of influence.

Akande emphasized the importance of graceful and measured leadership, particularly for figures of significant political relevance like Wike. He asserted that Wike, as the senior partner in the crisis, bears the primary responsibility for managing the situation, urging him to uphold a dignified and composed demeanor amid the unfolding events.

While acknowledging Wike’s past accomplishments, Akande underscored the critical need for the FCT Minister to exercise astute management of his anointed governor and the surrounding political dynamics, urging him to rise to the occasion commensurate with his esteemed position.

As the situation in Rivers State continues to unfold, Akande’s poignant remarks serve as a poignant reflection of the expectations placed upon influential political figures and the imperative of adept leadership in times of crisis.
