FRSC Urges Drivers to Avoid Alcohol to Curb Road Accidents

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is intensifying its call for drivers to abstain from alcohol and intoxicating substances in 2024 to reduce the incidence of road traffic crashes.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota, Anthony Uga, the FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun, emphasized that recent records point to a significant correlation between road accidents and the consumption of intoxicating substances. He noted that the majority of rescued drivers involved in road crashes during the last few weeks exhibited signs of alcohol consumption.

Uga stressed that the consumption of alcoholic beverages not only lacks any positive benefits but also significantly contributes to mishaps on the highways. He issued a plea to drivers who engage in such behaviors to desist from them, citing the unnecessary loss of lives and property as a consequence.

In a proactive move, Uga disclosed that the FRSC plans to launch sensitization campaigns at motor parks and garages to educate drivers on the dangers of consuming alcoholic and narcotic substances. He also urged the management of motor parks in the state to impose sanctions on drivers found to be under the influence of alcohol before operating their vehicles.

Furthermore, the sector commander called upon relevant government agencies to take measures to control the sale of alcoholic beverages and intoxicating substances in motor parks, highlighting the need for collective efforts to address this issue.

Uga reiterated the FRSC’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of the highways for all road users through a combination of public enlightenment and the strict enforcement of traffic regulations.

The FRSC’s proactive stance in curbing road accidents by addressing the critical issue of alcohol consumption among drivers serves as a testament to its dedication to ensuring the safety and security of the nation’s roadways.
