Seun Kuti Calls Out Super Eagles for Lack of Patriotism: AFCON 2023

Renowned afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has criticized the Nigerian national football team, Super Eagles, attributing their poor performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to a lack of patriotism. Kuti expressed disappointment in the players, emphasizing that while they excel at their respective clubs, their commitment wanes when representing the country.

In a passionate video shared on his Instagram page, Kuti dismissed financial motivations as justifications for underwhelming national performances. He argued that the players, many of whom are affluent, should prioritize national duty over monetary incentives, especially considering the broader significance of representing Africa on the international stage.

“Nigerian footballers are not patriotic. They are more interested in their oyibo clubs and the glams. They are not patriotic,” lamented Kuti, highlighting the disparity in their attitudes between club and national appearances. He urged the players to emulate the focus and dedication demonstrated by athletes in major international tournaments such as the Euros and the World Cup.

Kuti’s poignant critique underscores the broader issue of African footballers’ commitment to their national teams and the imperative for a shift in mindset. His remarks serve as a rallying cry for players to embrace a stronger sense of national pride, transcending personal interests for the collective honor of their country and continent.
