Police Inspector Detained for Alleged Assault and Extortion in Ogun State

The Ogun State Police Command has taken decisive action by detaining a police inspector for an orderly room trial following allegations of assault and extortion of a lady at a checkpoint in Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode.

According to SP Omolola Odutola, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, the incident gained traction on social media, prompting the swift intervention of the police authority in the state.

A 24-year-old woman, Funmilola Soyemi, lodged a complaint on January 13, leading to a thorough investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department. The investigation confirmed the officer’s misconduct, including the tracing of the account number into which the extorted money was deposited. The money has been recovered and marked as exhibit.

“The inspector has been detained for orderly room trial and has been issued an official query, as directed by the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu,” stated SP Omolola Odutola.

Emphasizing the zero-tolerance for misconduct breaching ethical standards expected of police officers, Odutola reiterated the importance of respecting the fundamental human rights of citizens, a principle consistently highlighted in lectures conducted for officers and men of the command.

The Commissioner of Police has been in communication with the complainant’s family, assuring them that officers will be held accountable for any failure to act in accordance with the rules of the force.

The Ogun State Police Command remains dedicated to upholding the rule of law and maintaining a transparent, respectful relationship as exemplified in the police rules and regulations. The outcome of the orderly room proceedings will be made public once the investigation is concluded.

This significant arrest underscores the commitment of the Ogun State Police Command to uphold the ethical standards and fundamental rights of citizens, setting a precedent for transparency and accountability within the force.
