KAROTA’s 2023 Efforts: Cracking Down on Traffic Offenders and Curbing Beer Smuggling

Kano Road and Traffic Agency, KAROTA, has made substantial strides in maintaining traffic order and enforcing regulations. In 2023, the agency apprehended 2,868 suspected traffic violators, reflecting a decrease from the previous year’s 3,000 cases. From the total offenders, 542 were taken to the mobile court for denying their violations, while 2,283 acknowledged their wrongdoings and promptly settled their fines. Notably, 43 individuals were acquitted by the court.

Not stopping at traffic violations, KAROTA confiscated a staggering 25 million bottles of beer valued at N500 million, subsequently transferring the seized items to the Kano State Hisbah Board for further investigation. To combat the smuggling of alcohol from neighboring states, KAROTA strategically stationed personnel in key locations.

Looking ahead, the agency outlined comprehensive plans for the upcoming year. It aims to train its staff extensively in engaging with motorists and deepening their understanding of traffic infractions. Furthermore, KAROTA has taken a proactive step by translating “Karota laws” into the local language, Hausa, to enhance motorists’ familiarity with the agency’s rules and regulations. Emphasizing the significance of public awareness, KAROTA intends to leverage the media to educate motorists about new policies, ultimately reducing road violations.

In anticipation of improved operational efficiency, KAROTA proposed the procurement of additional vehicles and power bikes. Moreover, the agency seeks to bolster its workforce in 2024, signaling a commitment to enhancing its overall effectiveness.

By cracking down on traffic offenses and addressing the issue of alcohol smuggling, KAROTA remains steadfast in its mission to maintain public safety and order on the roads.
