Actress Toyin Abraham’s Film ‘Malaika’ Sparks Legal Action Against Alleged Pirates

In a significant development, the Lagos State Police Command has brought six individuals before the Igbosere Chief Magistrate’s Court on charges of allegedly pirating actress Toyin Abraham’s movie, ‘Malaika’.

The movie ‘Malaika’ had its premiere in Lagos on December 17, 2023, followed by its theatrical release on December 22, 2023.

The police attorneys from the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Force CID, Alagbon, in Ikoyi, Lagos presented the accused individuals – Adekunle Segun, Kehinde Oseni, Adebiyi Sodiq, Oseni S. Akano, Adebiyi Suliat, and Agboola Motunrayo – before Chief Magistrate E. Ogunkanmi.

These individuals are facing charges of conspiracy, theft of intellectual property, piracy, and cyber-related crimes.

The prosecutor, Morufu Animashaun, informed the court that the alleged illegal act took place in January 2024 at Apapa. He cited violations of sections 411, 972, 415, and 87 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges, and Animashaun requested the court to remand them in a correctional center until the case is resolved.

It is noteworthy that Toyin Abraham recently revealed that she suffered panic attacks and had to be hospitalized upon discovering the piracy of her latest movie.
