Minister Zizi Kodwa Welcomes Suspension of Nelson Mandela Memorabilia Auction

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr Zizi Kodwa, has welcomed the decision by Guernsey’s Auction House to suspend the auction of items associated with former President Nelson Mandela, describing it as a positive step toward protecting the country’s cultural heritage.

The South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) confirmed that the auction was halted following engagements with Guernsey’s Auction House and Dr Makaziwe Mandela. The suspension allows ongoing legal proceedings concerning the matter to be concluded.

Minister Kodwa praised the cooperation between all parties involved, stating that the development creates room for due legal process to be finalized. He further disclosed that SAHRA, in collaboration with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the Robben Island Museum, will continue to appeal the High Court judgment related to the unpermitted export, exhibition, or auction of items linked to Nelson Mandela.

Reaffirming the government’s position, Minister Kodwa emphasized the importance of safeguarding South Africa’s cultural and historical assets. He noted that preserving Mandela’s legacy is critical to maintaining national identity and ensuring future generations understand the country’s history and values.

The ministry reiterated that South Africa’s cultural heritage plays a vital role in preserving collective memory and defining the nation’s identity.
