Sani Sha’aban, an in-law to President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has launched his governorship campaign with the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in preparation for the March 11 governorship election in the state. A former aspirant for the governorship and a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna, Sha’aban resigned from the ruling party last year. He previously contested in the APC’s governorship primary in May 2022 but expressed dissatisfaction with the party, stating that it had “little or no regard for human lives, social integration, and rule of law.” This prompted his decision to leave the APC and pursue his political ambitions with the ADP.
During the campaign kickoff at Tashan Yari in the Makarfi Local Government Area, Sha’aban outlined his promises, which include addressing poverty and the prevailing insecurity in the state. He emphasized that he is running to bring value to the people, who he claims are living in severe poverty. Sha’aban expressed his commitment to reclaiming the state from its current state of decay and addressing the insecurity that has hindered farmers from their work. After the rally, he spoke to reporters about his vision for restoring the peace and prosperity that the state enjoyed three decades ago, where Muslims and Christians coexisted without suspicion.
“My number one priority, if God grants me the chance, is to restore the past glory of Kaduna—a state where Christians and Muslims live together without fear of harm,” Sha’aban stated. He believes that restoring peace is essential for initiating development projects in areas such as education, agriculture, and trade. He lamented the current state of Kaduna, which he described as being in a catastrophic situation, where the once-thriving hub for ginger, potatoes, and other cash crops is now marked by poverty.
Sha’aban questioned the utility of infrastructure, stating, “What is the basis of having roads if there are no vehicles to use them, or if people have not been paid salaries and their children cannot attend school?” He painted a grim picture of the state, asserting that Kaduna is “virtually on its knees.”
Ben Kure, the Director-General of the ADP Governorship Campaign Council, also addressed the crowd, assuring them that if elected, Sha’aban’s administration would prioritize the needs of the masses. He explained that the campaign council chose to hold the rally outside the state capital to connect directly with the people. Kure emphasized that the ADP would ensure that the demands of the masses are met, contrasting this with past experiences where political promises were abandoned after elections.
Earlier, Umar Isah, the state chairman of the ADP, highlighted the urgent need for positive change in Kaduna. He asserted that only Sha’aban could bring about this change and urged the people to unite in order to oust the ruling APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). “The people of Kaduna State are yearning for change, and Sha’aban will deliver the much-needed transformation. The only alternative is to support the ADP and Sha’aban in the upcoming election,” he concluded.
