ECOWAS Urges Senegal to Set New Date for Presidential Election

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called on Senegal to promptly select a new date for the country’s postponed presidential elections. ECOWAS made this appeal following the decision by Senegalese authorities to delay the elections initially set for Feb. 25, 2024.

In a statement, the ECOWAS Commission expressed its concerns over the circumstances leading to the postponement and urged the authorities to expedite the processes for setting a new election date. Furthermore, ECOWAS urged the political class to prioritize dialogue and collaboration to ensure a transparent, inclusive, and credible election.

The Commission also commended President Macky Sall for adhering to his earlier decision not to seek another term and encouraged him to continue to uphold Senegal’s longstanding democratic tradition.

ECOWAS stated that it would continue to monitor the situation in the West African nation.

This development comes amidst growing anticipation for the presidential election in Senegal and adds to the international spotlight on the country’s democratic process.
