Renowned Nigerian musician, Crown Uzama, best known as Shallipopi, recently shared the intriguing inspiration behind his stage name. In an exclusive interview with British media personality, Madame Joyce, Shallipopi revealed that his moniker was derived from the 1994 Chinese kung fu comedy film, Shaolin Popey.
The singer disclosed that prior to adopting Shallipopi, he had contemplated using his birth name, Crown, as well as nicknames such as Drip Face. However, it was his serendipitous discovery of the movie that ultimately sparked the creative genesis for his stage identity.
Recalling his childhood, Shallipopi recounted how his mother unknowingly purchased what was thought to be a Tom And Jerry CD. To their surprise, it turned out to be the movie Shaolin Popey. “I was searching for a stage name and decided to derive something from the movie Shaolin Popey, and that’s how I came up with my nickname,” he explained.
Furthermore, Shallipopi clarified that his musical style is not rooted in Afrobeats, but rather in what he terms “afro-talk.” Emphatically, he stated, “I am not a rapper; I am a talker.”
