Niger Governor Orders Release of Economic Hardship Protesters

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger has instructed the release of 22 male and three female protesters who were taken into custody by the police following demonstrations against economic hardship in Minna. Following a review of the circumstances, the state government deemed their arrest to be a misunderstanding and they have been exonerated.

Binta Mamman, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, issued an apology to the arrested individuals and their families, as well as the entire state, emphasizing the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights and freedoms of all citizens.

Mamman clarified that the protesters were apprehended after their demonstration turned violent and led to the destruction of public and private property. She pointed out that the protesters had failed to seek prior permission from the police before initiating the protest.

She acknowledged the prevalent economic challenges faced by the people and urged for constructive dialogue to address the hardships, discouraging violent protests and advocating for meaningful discussions as a means to alleviate the suffering of the populace. Mamman emphasized the government’s dedication to delivering relief measures to alleviate hardship.

The inhabitants of Minna took to the streets in significant numbers to voice their discontent with the escalating cost of living, urging both the federal and state governments to take urgent actions in addressing the prevailing hardships across the nation.
