US Expresses Sadness Over Deaths During Senegal Protests

The United States has expressed deep sadness over the deaths of two protestors in Senegal, while France24 and RFI report three fatalities. The US Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs urged all parties to prioritize peace and called on President Macky Sall to restore the electoral calendar.

In a statement released on February 6, 2024, the Department of State expressed deep concern over the postponement of Senegal’s February 25 presidential election, emphasizing that such actions contradict Senegal’s democratic tradition. The US also urged the Senegalese government to uphold the constitution and electoral laws, restore full Internet access, and ensure freedom of peaceful assembly and expression, including for the press. The Department of State reaffirmed its commitment to engage with all parties and regional partners in the coming days.
