Gombe State Government Confirms Cerebrospinal Meningitis Outbreak: Urges Vigilance

The Gombe State Government has officially confirmed the presence of cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) within the state, following reports of a mysterious illness in the Nafada Local Government Area. The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, revealed that investigations conducted by the government indicated that the symptoms observed were consistent with CSM.

In light of this development, Dr. Dahiru has urged residents to promptly report any suspected cases of the disease to the nearest health facility for immediate attention and intervention. This call to action comes amidst growing concerns and social media reports of an unknown illness in Nafada and other Local Government Areas, particularly those bordering Yobe State where the outbreak has tragically claimed the lives of at least 30 individuals.

During a press briefing, Dr. Dahiru emphasized the importance of refraining from spreading unverified information and stressed the significance of following established protocols for reporting public health emergencies. While acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, he clarified that the Incident Management System (IMS) would not be activated at this time, as the state has not yet met the criteria for a CSM outbreak, which necessitates ten confirmed cases per 100,000 individuals in the district on a weekly basis.

Assuring the public of proactive measures being implemented, Dr. Dahiru disclosed that an Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) has been activated to address suspected cases of CSM promptly. The government remains vigilant in its efforts to safeguard the health and well-being of the population, underscoring the importance of swift action and collaboration in combating the spread of infectious diseases.
