In a recent report by UNICEF, it was revealed that a staggering 23% of children under the age of five in Cross River State are suffering from stunted growth due to severe malnutrition. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for action to address this pressing issue.
During a visit to Governor Bassey Otu in Calabar, UNICEF Field Officer, Dr. Ngozi Onuora, emphasized the detrimental impact of malnutrition on the development and productivity of these young children. Despite the challenges, she commended the State Government for their efforts to prioritize nutrition and make it more inclusive.
Mrs. Onuora pointed out that while Cross River State has made strides in upholding children’s rights, there is still a significant gap in exclusive breastfeeding rates. She expressed UNICEF’s satisfaction with the integration of nutrition into various government budgets but stressed the importance of increased investment in this critical area.
Governor Otu, represented by Deputy Governor Peter Odey, welcomed the UNICEF team and confirmed the approval of the State Policy on Nutrition. This milestone signifies a step in the right direction towards combating malnutrition and improving the well-being of children in the state.
