IPOB Opposes State Police: Calls for Regional Policing Solution

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has raised concerns about the proposed creation of state police in Nigeria. According to Emma Powerful, the spokesperson for IPOB, regional policing is seen as a more effective solution to address the ongoing insecurity in the country.

In a statement released by Powerful, he expressed scepticism towards the Federal Government’s plan to establish state police, suggesting that it could potentially be exploited by certain governors to harbour criminals and terrorists within their states. IPOB, under the leadership of Nnamdi Kanu, advocates for the establishment of Regional Police instead of State Police.

Powerful criticized the government’s motives behind the proposal, alleging that it could be a ploy to consolidate power under the ruling party rather than genuinely addressing security challenges. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between neighbouring states in combating insecurity, highlighting the potential risks associated with individual states having their police forces.

The statement also called for the empowerment of regions in Nigeria to establish their police commands, comprising local officers who would report to the regional governance structure. By decentralizing the policing system and involving regional stakeholders, IPOB believes that a more effective and accountable approach to security can be achieved.

In conclusion, IPOB urges the Federal Government and the National Assembly to consider the establishment of Regional Police Commands as a viable alternative to the proposed State Police. By prioritizing regional cooperation and indigenous representation in law enforcement, IPOB aims to contribute to a more secure and inclusive security framework in Nigeria.
