Renowned Nollywood comic actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, was not just a beloved figure in Nigeria but also a celebrated icon across Africa. Dominic Nwuzoru, his manager, shared insights into Mr Ibu’s widespread popularity in countries like Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Gambia, Gabon, and Botswana during his lifetime.
Nwuzoru highlighted how Mr Ibu used his humor to promote peace and unity, earning him honors and recognition from leaders and communities across the continent. In Ghana, he played a pivotal role in reconciling two warring tribes through his performance, leading to him being bestowed with a Chieftaincy title as the ‘Malangula I of Tamale Land’, symbolizing the peacemaker.
During a visit to Botswana, Mr Ibu proudly displayed the Nigerian flag, showcasing his patriotism and countering negative perceptions about Nigeria. Nwuzoru emphasized that Mr Ibu’s influence extended beyond acting, as he served as a cultural ambassador for Nollywood, using his talent to spread joy and foster unity among Africans.
