Kaduna Electricity Workers Demand Justice, Threaten License Seizure

Workers at Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company have taken a stand against alleged injustices and industrial disputes, leading to a withdrawal of their services. The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) is at the forefront of this protest, demanding the revocation of the company’s license.

The workers have raised several issues, including the non-payment of pensions for six years, failure to provide death benefits to deceased staff members, unfair termination of employees in Zaria, and the looming threat of mass layoffs. These grievances have prompted the workers to block the entrance to the company’s headquarters in Kaduna, disrupting normal operations.

Ayuba Pukat, the Organising Secretary of NUEE in the North West, highlighted the dire situation faced by the workers. He emphasized the non-remittance of pension funds, leading to financial hardships for employees. Additionally, he condemned the unjust dismissal of staff members in Zaria without due process.

Despite the workers’ protests, the Head of Corporate Communications at Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, expressed disappointment at the strike, labeling it as unnecessary and harmful to the company’s operations. He urged the workers to reconsider their actions and allow business activities to resume smoothly.

In the midst of this turmoil, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently appointed Dr. Umar Abubakar Hashidu as the administrator of KAEDC, signaling a potential shift in leadership and management strategies.

As tensions escalate between the workers and management, the future of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company hangs in the balance. Will the demands of the workers be met, or will the company face further disruptions and challenges? Only time will tell as both sides navigate this complex and contentious situation.
