Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union have initiated a nationwide strike today over alleged unfair treatment and salary disparities by the Federal Government.
Last week, the unions issued a warning that they would disrupt university operations, including shutting down hostels and power supply, if their demands were not met by today, March 18, 2024.
Muhammed Ibrahim, the National President of SSANU, highlighted that members, including Vice Chancellors, registrars, and bursars, have not received their 2022 arrears.
Despite Minister for Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman claiming ignorance of the strike, Ibrahim confirmed on a television program that the strike had indeed commenced.
“All our workers in registry, bursary, works and maintenance, security, and students’ affairs have withdrawn their services. Nothing is moving within the administration of any public university in Nigeria,” Ibrahim stated.
He expressed disappointment in the lack of official communication from government representatives and criticized the failure to comply with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to pay the arrears.
The unions have given the government a seven-day ultimatum to address their grievances. Should their demands remain unmet, they will consider further action.
The strike has already caused disruptions in university operations, and the unions remain steadfast in their resolve until their concerns are addressed.
