Nnamdi Kanus Family Criticizes Igbo Leaders for Failing to Secure

The family of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, has expressed disappointment in the political leaders of the South-East for not taking action to secure his release. Kanu has been in custody since June 29, 2021, and his recent bail application was denied by Justice Binta Nyako.

In a statement on behalf of the family, Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel, questioned why Igbo political leaders had not approached President Bola Tinubu to discuss Kanu’s situation, despite having access to the President on other matters. Emmanuel suggested that some individuals may be benefiting from Kanu’s continued incarceration, leading to a lack of urgency from the political elite in seeking his release.

Emmanuel threatened to expose those who are profiting from Kanu’s detention and the insecurity in the Southeast region if action is not taken. He emphasized that Kanu was advocating for the freedom of Ndigbo and Biafra without resorting to violence, yet he has been labeled a terrorist.

The family also expressed disappointment in Justice Nyako’s decision to deny Kanu bail, questioning whether she had thoroughly reviewed the Supreme Court judgment that stated the Federal High Court should not have revoked Kanu’s bail initially.

Emmanuel warned that if the political leaders do not act, the people of Ndigbo and Biafra will hold them accountable, and the truth behind Kanu’s continued detention will eventually come to light. He concluded by highlighting that no situation lasts forever, and those benefiting from the insecurity in the region will eventually lose power.

The family’s statement underscores the frustration and sense of betrayal felt by Kanu’s loved ones and supporters, as they continue to advocate for his release and justice to prevail.
