In the midst of the recent uproar surrounding a controversial N40 billion meter contract awarded to a foreign company, Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian government’s commitment to supporting local meter manufacturers.
During a recent visit to MEMMCOL, a local electricity meter manufacturer in Mowe, Ogun State, Minister Adelabu addressed concerns raised over the awarding of the contract to De Haryor Global, bypassing indigenous manufacturers.
Assuring local meter manufacturers of the government’s dedication to promoting indigenous content and stimulating sector growth, Adelabu emphasized the importance of providing support through access to affordable financing and long-term capital.
“We will prioritize patronage to ensure the sustainability of local producers, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda for economic renewal,” stated Adelabu. “It is imperative to have a significant local presence in power sector projects and contracts to sustain our local producers.”
Adelabu stressed the necessity of developing local capacity and infrastructure to reduce reliance on imports, emphasizing the importance of technical training to enhance local production capabilities.
With a focus on full backward integration, Minister Adelabu highlighted the need for a comprehensive plan to achieve locally manufactured products and reduce dependence on foreign imports.
By supporting local producers and investing in technical training, the Nigerian government aims to boost local manufacturing capacity and close the metering gap, ensuring a sustainable future for the power sector.
