The latest Transport Fare Watch report from the National Bureau of Statistics reveals a significant increase in the average fare paid by commuters for journeys within the city. In February, commuters shelled out an average of N951.76, marking a 46.98% surge from the previous year’s N647.54. Despite this year-on-year spike, there was a slight 1.21% drop in transport fare from the previous month.

Taking a closer look at the state-by-state analysis, Taraba State topped the list with the highest bus journey fare within the city at N1,400.00, closely followed by Ondo at N1,200.00. On the flip side, Abia State recorded the lowest fare at N500.00, with Adamawa State trailing at N585.00.

Shifting gears to intercity bus journeys, commuters saw a whopping 75.48% increase in the average fare, soaring to N7,002.97 in February 2024 from N3,999.70 in the same month last year. When broken down by state, Akwa-Ibom and Anambra states claimed the top spots with fares hitting N9,000.00, while Abuja followed closely behind at N8,050.00. Conversely, Kwara State boasted the lowest fare at N5,000.00, with Ebonyi State not far behind at N5,700.00.
