Zanu PF Activists from Glenview Cleared of Charges in CCC Rally Violence

Zanu PF activists from Glenview who were previously arrested in connection with the tragic death of opposition activist Tinashe Chitsunge have been released from remand after the prosecution failed to provide evidence linking them to the alleged crime. The thirteen individuals, including Cleopas Ndlovu, Ruzivo Mapuranga, and Pauline Chikomo, were granted freedom by Harare Magistrate Simon Kandiyero following a successful application for refusal of further remand by their lawyer, Stephen Chikotora.

The activists were initially charged with public violence stemming from an incident that took place just days before the 2023 harmonized election. It was alleged that they disrupted a Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) rally at a stadium in Glenview. According to court documents, the group had a confrontation with police officers from ZRP Glenview who were present to oversee the sanctioned CCC rally scheduled for Chimunhu Grounds, Tanaka Area, Glen View 7, Harare on August 3.

The situation escalated when the activists refused to disperse and make way for the upcoming rally, instead engaging in violent behavior such as throwing stones. The police had to intervene by using tear gas to break up the altercation. Subsequently, clashes between the activists and CCC supporters ensued, resulting in property damage, theft, and the tragic loss of Chitsunge’s life.

The case will only proceed if the State decides to summon the individuals back to court for the commencement of their trial. The incident serves as a reminder of the tensions and political unrest that continue to plague Zimbabwe in the lead-up to elections.
