ADDIS ABABA — Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh emphasized the importance of increasing production and productivity to address various challenges during the National Agricultural Lime Supply and Distribution Launch Program for the 2016/17 Ethiopian fiscal year of Crop Season. The theme of the program, “Soil Health for the Survival of the Country,” highlighted the significance of treating acidic soils in order to improve agricultural output.
In his address at the event, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh stressed the need for a strategic approach to preserving soil fertility through effective planning, research, and experience in the agricultural sector. He underscored the role of boosting production and productivity in tackling issues such as food insecurity and high living costs.
Minister of Agriculture, Girma Amentie (PhD), echoed the importance of collaborative efforts in treating acidic soils with agricultural lime to maintain soil fertility sustainably. Research findings have shown that the application of agricultural lime has led to significant increases in crop yields, with notable improvements in Wheat, Barley, Corn, and Beans production.
According to Girma, a substantial portion of cultivated land in Ethiopia is affected by soil acidity, with a significant percentage facing strong acidity. However, Ethiopia possesses a considerable amount of lime that can be utilized to address soil acidity issues and safeguard soil fertility in the long term.
The program, attended by government officials and representatives from various regions, highlighted the potential of agricultural lime in enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring food security in Ethiopia. By focusing on soil health and fertility, the country aims to overcome challenges and achieve sustainable agricultural development.
