Six members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, who were elected under the Labour Party, have made a significant decision to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This announcement was made during the Assembly’s plenary session on Thursday.

The reason behind their defection, as stated by the members, is the deep-rooted division and ongoing crisis within the Labour Party at both the national and state levels. They expressed their disappointment in the party’s inability to resolve internal conflicts, which have hindered its ability to effectively represent the interests of the people.

The members highlighted the existence of factions such as the Abure and Apapa groups, as well as conflicts involving the national treasurer and the parent body, NLC, as contributing factors to their decision to leave the Labour Party. They emphasized their desire to continue serving their constituents and expressed gratitude to the Labour Party leadership for their past support.

Among the defectors are prominent figures such as the Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Ejike Eze, the House leader, Hon. Johnson Ugwu, and Hon. Princess Ugwu representing Enugu South Rural. Other members who joined the defection include Hon. Pius Ezeugwu from Nsukka East, Hon. Amuka Williams from Igbo-Etiti West, and Hon. Osita Eze from Oji River.

The motion to accept their defection was put forward by Rt. Hon. Iloabuchi Aniagu and seconded by Rt. Hon. Jane Eneh, signifying a significant shift in the political landscape of Enugu State.
