EFCC Chairman Vows to Combat Economic Crimes Beyond “Yahoo Boys”

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, has made it clear that the agency’s efforts are not solely focused on internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as “Yahoo boys.” Olukoyede emphasized that the EFCC is committed to a comprehensive and inclusive anti-corruption campaign that targets all forms of economic and financial crimes. Speaking at an Anti-Corruption Concert in Abuja, Olukoyede reiterated the agency’s dedication to combatting corrupt practices at all levels. He emphasized, “We will not spare anyone. We will not spare the mega thieves. As we are going after the big fish, we will also address those involved in smaller-scale crimes.” Olukoyede highlighted recent cases where the EFCC has prosecuted former governors, debunking the notion that the agency is solely focused on internet fraud. He stressed that while internet fraud is a serious offense, the EFCC’s mandate extends to all types of economic and financial crimes. Addressing the youth directly, Olukoyede warned against engaging in internet-related offenses, emphasizing the severe consequences of conviction. He cautioned, “Youths need to understand that being convicted of such crimes can severely limit their future prospects. The stigma of being an ex-convict can have lasting repercussions, including restrictions on running for public office.” In conclusion, Olukoyede urged young people to prioritize their future over short-term gains from illegal activities. He emphasized the importance of steering clear of internet crimes and making ethical choices to safeguard their prospects and reputation.
