The Ekiti Patriotic Consultative Forum, a socio-political pressure group, has taken legal action against the State Government in a bid to obtain crucial documents related to the Ekiti Cargo Airport project. Lead solicitor Oluwagbenga Babawibe, representing the forum, revealed that the group had made a formal request for financial records and loan information pertaining to the project, citing the Ekiti State Freedom of Information Law, 2011.

Despite sending multiple requests to government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government and the State Accountant General, the group received no response. Frustrated by the lack of transparency, the forum decided to file a motion for an order of Mandamus in the State High Court, compelling the government to release the requested documents.

The documents in question include details of the contract signed with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Limited (CCECCL), as well as information on loans obtained for the project and funds disbursed from the state treasury. The forum, comprised of responsible Ekiti indigenes, emphasized the importance of accountability and proper management of public funds.

The Ekiti Cargo International Airport, commissioned over two years ago, has raised concerns among residents due to the absence of commercial aircraft utilizing the facility. Despite the inauguration ceremony led by former governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi, reports suggest that critical aspects of the project remain incomplete, prompting ongoing work under the current administration of Gov. Biodun Oyebanji.

The forum’s legal action underscores the need for transparency and oversight in public projects, highlighting the importance of accountability in government spending. As the court proceedings unfold, the Ekiti Patriotic Consultative Forum remains steadfast in its pursuit of ensuring probity and effective governance in the state.
