An 80-year-old man accused of historic sexual abuse of children has been apprehended at Heathrow Airport after evading authorities for 27 years, British police announced on Tuesday. Richard Burrows, wanted since 1997 for failing to appear in court on charges of buggery and indecent assault, was finally captured upon his return from Thailand.
The allegations stem from incidents dating back to 1969-1971, reportedly occurring at a children’s home in Congleton, Cheshire, and in the West Midlands. Detective Eleanor Atkinson of Cheshire Police expressed relief at Burrows’ arrest, emphasizing the relentless pursuit of justice over nearly three decades.
Acknowledging the public’s assistance in the search for Burrows, Atkinson highlighted the significance of his apprehension as a message to other fugitives that evading the law is not a viable option. The National Crime Agency’s Duncan Burrage commended the collaborative efforts that led to Burrows’ capture, underscoring the gravity of the allegations against him.
Burrows, now in custody, is set to face trial at Chester Crown Court, marking a pivotal moment in a long-standing case. The arrest serves as a testament to the unwavering commitment of law enforcement in pursuing justice, regardless of the passage of time.
