Former Nigerian lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has expressed his concerns regarding the recent decision by the Federal Government to raise electricity tariffs. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved the increase for customers in the Band A category, with the Vice Chairman, Musliu Oseni, making the announcement during a press briefing in Abuja.
Under the new adjustment, customers will now be required to pay N225 per kilowatt-hour, a significant increase from the previous rate of N66. Sani, who previously represented the Kaduna central district in the 8th assembly, believes that this sharp rise in tariffs will have detrimental effects on the livelihoods of Nigerians and the survival of businesses.
In a statement, Sani expressed his concerns, stating that the 300% increase in electricity tariffs will have severe consequences, potentially “electrocuting” the lives and businesses of individuals across the country.
