The Edo State House of Assembly has made serious allegations against the Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, accusing him of leaking government secrets and committing perjury, which they deem as impeachable offenses. This revelation came to light during the inauguration of a seven-man panel, led by retired Justice S.A. Omonuwa, to investigate the claims against Shaibu.

The Assembly’s decision to initiate impeachment proceedings against Shaibu was based on a petition alleging that he had violated the Oath of Secrecy by disclosing confidential information in an affidavit filed in support of a lawsuit in Abuja. The panel adjourned the hearing to allow Shaibu to present his defense.

The rift between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki has been escalating, particularly since Shaibu declared his intention to run for the Edo governorship. Shaibu’s lawyer, Prof. Oladoyin Awoyale (SAN), attempted to halt the impeachment proceedings by citing a pending court case in Abuja, but the panel rejected his request, citing constitutional obligations.

Despite the legal maneuvering, the panel chairman, Justice Omonuwa, upheld the Assembly’s right to proceed with the impeachment process. Awoyale eventually excused himself from further participation in the investigation, emphasizing the importance of obeying the court’s decision.

The unfolding drama in Edo State highlights the power struggle and political tensions within the government. As the case continues to unfold, the fate of Deputy Governor Shaibu hangs in the balance, with legal battles and constitutional duties at the forefront of the conflict.
