Bobrisky Arrested by EFCC for Naira Note Abuse: Legal Consequences

Popular transgender socialite Bobrisky has been arrested and paraded by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). According to the anti-graft agency, Bobrisky was arrested for spraying new naira notes at the film premiere of “Beast of Two Worlds” at the Film One Circle Mall, Lekki, Lagos on March 24, 2024. The agency noted that the suspect had also committed the alleged offence at some other event centres and parties at different times.

Bobrisky stands accused of abusing naira notes and is going to be charged in court. Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act states that tampering with a coin or note issued by the Bank is an offence punishable by imprisonment or a fine. Specifically, spraying, dancing, or matching on the naira or any note issued by the Bank during social occasions is considered an abuse and defacing of the currency.

This is not the first time Bobrisky has faced legal consequences for similar actions. On Thursday, February 1, 2024, she was convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos. She was also given the option of paying a fine of ₦300,000 to avoid spending time in prison.

The law is clear on the consequences of tampering with currency, and Bobrisky’s case serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting legal regulations. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
