Veteran actor and filmmaker, Ugezu Ugezu, has recently addressed the concerning increase in deaths within the Nigerian movie industry. Reports from Media Talk Africa have highlighted the passing of several actors, including well-known figures such as Mr Ibu, Amaechi Muonagor, Sisi Quadri, Adejumoke Aderounmu, and the most recent loss of Junior Pope, all within the first quarter of 2024.
Taking to his Instagram page to share his thoughts, Ugezu emphasized that the situation should not be viewed as a specific tragedy confined to Nollywood alone. He pointed out that individuals from various professions also face mortality on a regular basis, albeit with less public attention. Ugezu attributed the surge in deaths to what he described as the “systematic destruction of the health sector” in the country.
In a poignant message, Ugezu highlighted the unfortunate reality of lives lost across different sectors, including bankers, police officers, and religious leaders, whose passing often goes unnoticed by the public eye. He urged for a shift in perspective, calling for a deeper understanding of the underlying issues plaguing the healthcare system in Nigeria.
“Entertainers are often in the spotlight, but the truth is, this is not just a Nollywood tragedy,” Ugezu expressed. “It is a reflection of a broader systemic failure that affects us all.”
