The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) recently saw a significant moment as the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, was appointed as its Chancellor by the Federal Government. The prestigious ceremony took place during the 13th Convocation and Investiture Ceremony in Abuja, where President Bola Tinubu, representing the visitor of the institution, adorned the Benin monarch with this esteemed title.
A total of 22,175 graduates were honored at the event, receiving various degrees and merit awards. In his address, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of the Oba of Benin’s role in enhancing the university’s success and fulfilling its longstanding mission. Oba Ewuare II was also granted an Honoris Causa, Doctorate in Public Administration, by the university.
In his acceptance speech, Oba Ewuare II highlighted the need for increased funding for the university and urged the government to prioritize maintaining high standards in higher education. He also advocated for NOUN graduates to be included in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, calling for amendments to the institution’s founding legislation.
The Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Olufemi Peters, praised the convocation as a significant milestone for the graduates, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to providing accessible education for all. President Tinubu echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of cutting-edge research that benefits Nigerian society.
The Federal Government’s commitment to promoting distance learning was reiterated, with a focus on expanding access and ensuring quality and affordability in tertiary education.
