The governor of Niger State, Umaru Bago, has taken decisive action in response to the escalating insecurity in the state. Following a resurgence of violent activities by thugs in the state capital, Minna, Governor Bago has declared a state of emergency.
During a Sallah Durbar festival organized by former governor Babangida Aliyu, Governor Bago announced that he has instructed security agencies to shoot at sight any thug posing a threat to the peace within the state. This bold move comes after two individuals lost their lives and several others were injured in recent clashes in Minna.
Governor Bago attributed the renewed clashes to the activities of artisanal miners in the state capital and has consequently ordered the closure of all mining sites. He emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards insecurity and thuggery, stating that anyone found engaging in such activities will face severe consequences.
The ongoing activities of thugs have had a significant impact on the community, leading to the suspension of the Sallah Durbar in Minna Emirate for the past seven years. Aminu Ladan, the chairman of Chanchaga local government area, also linked the fresh crisis to the activities of miners, highlighting the disruption caused to businesses and the annual festival celebrations.
Governor Bago’s firm stance against insecurity and criminal activities demonstrates his commitment to restoring peace and stability in Niger State.
