The Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has issued a stern warning against obstructing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from carrying out its lawful duties. In a statement released in Abuja, Mr. Fagbemi emphasized the importance of cooperating with the EFCC during their investigations, regardless of one’s status.
“It is now beyond doubt that the EFCC is empowered by law to invite any person of interest to engage with them in the course of their inquiries into any matter,” stated Fagbemi. He urged individuals to honorably respond to invitations from the EFCC and not impede their work.
Fagbemi highlighted the significance of upholding the rule of law and advised against evading legal processes. He emphasized the role of Nigeria’s judicial system in safeguarding individuals who abide by the law and encouraged prompt compliance with invitations from law enforcement agencies.
The Minister stressed the need for state institutions to operate effectively and efficiently, reaffirming his commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the protection of fundamental rights for all Nigerians.
The EFCC, in response to increasing incidents of obstruction during their operations, reminded the public that impeding officers of the Commission in carrying out their duties is a criminal offense. Section 38(2)(a)(b) of the EFCC Establishment Act specifies that obstructing EFCC officers can result in a jail term of not less than five years.
The EFCC expressed concern over individuals and groups resorting to unlawful means, such as hiring thugs, to obstruct their operations. Despite facing provocations, the Commission emphasized the importance of exercising restraint to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
As Nigeria continues its fight against corruption, cooperation with law enforcement agencies like the EFCC is crucial in upholding transparency and accountability.
