The European Union’s top court has imposed a hefty penalty on Hungary, fining the country €200 million ($216 million) and ordering a daily fine of €1 million. This action comes as a consequence of Hungary’s failure to adhere to EU asylum laws and its unlawful deportation of refugees.
The European Court of Justice criticized Budapest for deliberately evading compliance with EU regulations despite a 2020 ruling mandating Hungary to uphold international asylum procedures. This ruling underscores the EU’s commitment to enforcing legal standards across member states, particularly concerning the treatment of asylum seekers.
