Jonathan Majors has made a notable return to the film industry, landing his first role since his assault conviction. According to Deadline, the acclaimed actor is set to star in Martin Villeneuve’s upcoming sci-fi revenge thriller, Merciless.
The film centres on CIA interrogator John, who embarks on a mission to rescue the woman he loves from a mysterious and enigmatic force, leading him down a darker path. Villeneuve, the younger brother of renowned director Denis Villeneuve, will begin filming with Majors and an unnamed cast this fall in Saskatchewan.
“Merciless intertwines themes of possession, revenge, and personal justice within a haunting narrative,” Villeneuve explained in an interview. “It explores the psychological descent of John, played by Majors, and the supernatural forces challenging his sanity.”
The project will be produced by Christopher Tuffin, who plans to launch his new global media venture with Merciless as its inaugural film. Tuffin revealed that the brand’s identity and name will be unveiled at the Toronto Film Festival. “[It’s a media venture that] refuses to let the court of public opinion and selective prosecution undermine great art and artists,” Tuffin told Deadline.
Tuffin expressed his enthusiasm for working with Majors, emphasizing his belief in due process and the importance of not allowing politics to undermine artists’ careers. “I consider it an honour and a privilege to be working with Jonathan, who is such a great talent now that this matter has been adjudicated.”
Majors, convicted of reckless assault in the third degree and harassment in December 2023, was acquitted of two other charges of intentional assault and aggravated harassment. Despite the conviction, Majors is gradually reestablishing his presence in the entertainment world. He is set to receive the Perseverance Award at the Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards in Los Angeles on June 21.
