Latto Opens Up About New Music, Rap Beef, and Drake-Kendrick Lamar Feud

Latto Spills on Her New Music and the Current State of Hip-Hop

Rising star Latto recently opened up about the direction of her new music and taking on a new alter-ego in an exclusive interview with Billboard. The 25-year-old discussed her plans to push the boundaries of her sound, exploring a new persona: Big Mama.

In the interview, Latto shared her thoughts on the ongoing rap beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. When asked if she’d engage in a rap battle with Ice Spice, the “Big Energy” star said it would have to be with someone she felt could keep up with her rhymes. “If I was to do [a battle], it would have to be with somebody I feel like Imma go tit for tat with… Would she even want to do that? I feel like she’s doing her in her lane,” she said.

On the topic of rap beefs and online drama, Latto expressed that people get too emotional about their favorite rappers and that healthy rivalries in hip-hop can be stimulating for the culture. “I like the back-and-forth,” she said, referring to the Drake and Kendrick Lamar feud. “It just felt nostalgic. I don’t think our generation has even seen a rivalry like that… That sh*t fye for the culture.”

Despite “Not Like Us” being the current fan favorite diss track, Latto is solidly behind “Family Matters.” When speaking about Drake’s new music, Latto shared how she reacted to hearing a new track and said it played throughout her entire car ride home. “We was leaving from a Mariah the Scientist concert, and they said Drake dropped another one. I played that sh*t the whole ride home, and then sitting in front of the house, I’m like, ‘Hold on, just play it again! That was the one.'”

Latto’s interview with Billboard will be published in its entirety at a later date.
