Falz Opens Up on How His Upbringing Influenced His Approach to Activism

Nigerian rapper Falz has given a rare insight into how his upbringing has shaped his approach to activism. In a recent interview on Menisms Podcast, the famous singer revealed that his activism did not start with the #ENDSARS protest in Lagos in 2020.

Falz attributed his activism to the influence of his father, Femi Falana, a renowned human rights lawyer, and the legendary musician Fela Kuti. He explained that growing up with a father who has been an activist for over 40 years had a profound impact on him.

“Having someone like that as a father, everywhere I went, someone had a story about what my father did for them. So that level of selflessness played a part in who I became,” Falz said.

The rapper also drew inspiration from his surroundings, saying that he has always been conscious of the world around him. He emphasized that his activism did not start suddenly, but rather evolved over time.

“2020 was a time when so much was happening that we needed to take further steps from just talking and walking the walk. Of course, I was going to be in front because I had been talking the talk anyway,” Falz stated.

Falz’s words offer a glimpse into the complex factors that shape an individual’s approach to activism. His story serves as a reminder that activism is often rooted in personal experiences and values, and that even the most influential figures in society have a deep-seated desire to make a positive impact.

As Falz continues to use his platform to raise awareness and advocate for change, his words serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of staying true to one’s values and using one’s influence to make a positive difference in the world.
