Youth Leaders in Plateau State Decline Participation in Nationwide Protest

Ahead of a planned nationwide protest scheduled for August 1, the Plateau Communities Youth Leaders Coalition has announced that it will not be participating in the exercise. The decision was made after a press briefing in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, where the coalition’s spokesman, Pololis Gyang, addressed the media.

Gyang emphasized that the coalition is committed to the welfare and well-being of the people, pursuing these objectives with a foundation of equity and reciprocity, aiming for peace and development in their communities. However, he expressed concerns about the ambiguous and unclear circumstances surrounding the protest, citing the devastating impact of current hardships on the people.

The coalition acknowledged the widespread hunger, hardship, and uncertainty regarding the state of the economy, but questioned the motives of the protest organizers, citing the suspicious manner in which the protest is being orchestrated. Gyang emphasized that the right to protest is fundamental, but the coalition remains unconvinced by the motives of the organizers.

The coalition also expressed concerns about the recruitment of touts, cultists, students, and individuals of questionable character within their communities, suggesting that these individuals may be trying to foment trouble and cause mayhem. They urged their people to protect their communities from elements seeking to cause chaos.

Instead of participating in the protest, the coalition has announced its willingness to engage the government in finding lasting solutions to the country’s economic crisis through constructive dialogue. The coalition has stated that it will not participate in protests that may plunge their state into anarchy, chaos, and untold hardship.

This decision by the Plateau Communities Youth Leaders Coalition may have significant implications for the planned nationwide protest and the ongoing economic crisis in the country. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how other groups and organizations will respond to the coalition’s decision.
