Akili McDowell, Star of Oprah’s ‘David Makes Man,’ Charged with Murder and Theft After Houston Shooting

Akili McDowell, the 21-year-old star of Oprah Winfrey Network’s series "David Makes Man," has been arrested and charged with murder and theft following a fatal shooting in Houston, Texas. According to officials, McDowell was taken into custody on August 1 and his arrest was publicly announced by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez on August 3.

The shooting incident, which occurred on July 20, took place in the parking lot of an apartment complex, where 20-year-old Cesar Peralta was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Peralta was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities claim that those suspected of killing him had fled the area. McDowell’s bail has been set at $400,000, and he was booked to appear in court on Monday (August 5).

It is currently unknown whether McDowell knew the victim, and authorities have not revealed how he was identified as one of the suspects. Additionally, it is unclear whether McDowell has submitted a plea or obtained an attorney to represent him.

McDowell made his acting debut at 16, starring as David in "David Makes Man," which premiered in August 2019. The show received a Peabody Award for Entertainment in 2020 and was renewed for a second season, which premiered in June 2021. Phylicia Rashad also appeared in the show, playing the role of Dr. Woods-Trap.

In addition to his work on "David Makes Man," McDowell has appeared in several other projects, including "It’s Not About Me," "The Astronaut Wives Club," "Billions," and "I Am Athlete."
