Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff Warns of Treasonable Offence for Flying Foreign Flags

In a stern warning, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, has stated that individuals flying foreign flags, including the Russian flag, have committed a treasonable offence. The warning comes as protests across the country, including the #EndBadGovernance movement, have seen some protesters hoisting foreign flags.

Speaking after an emergency security session with President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock, Musa vowed that the law would catch up with those responsible. "We wanted to brief Mr President on the situation on the ground and we know that since the riot has started all the security agencies you can see all of us together. Initially, when the riot started they said it was a peaceful one but we have realised that there are individuals that are willing to take advantage of it to cause mayhem," he said.

The Chief of Defence Staff also warned against attempts to disrupt the peace and tranquility of Nigeria, stating that the military would not accept anyone pushing for a change of government through undemocratic means. "Nigeria is a sovereign nation, Nigeria is a democratic nation all security agencies are here to defend democracy and ensure that democracy continues to strive. We will not accept anyone pushing or taking any action, seemingly or for whatever reason to want to push for any change of government. Democracy is what we stand for democracy is what will continue to defend," he emphasized.

Musa also cautioned that the military would take serious action against those sponsoring children to fly foreign flags, stating that they had identified the areas and would take necessary steps to address the issue.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over the increasing incidence of protests and violence in Nigeria, with many calling for greater efforts to address the root causes of the unrest.
