Teenage Girls Drown in Jigawa Pond, Nigeria
Three teenage girls have tragically drowned in a pond in Buji Local Government Area of Jigawa, Nigeria, on Saturday. According to reports, the girls, Fatima Sule, 12, Nasiya Sale, 12, and Huwaila Sa’adu, 13, all from Tulla village, drowned while cutting grasses to feed their livestock beside the pond.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Spokesperson, ASC Badaruddeen Tijuana, confirmed the incident in a statement in Dutse, on Sunday. He revealed that the incident occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. when the girls went to cut the grass. Later, at around 11:10 a.m., the NSCDC personnel in the area received a distress call from members of the Tulla community and rushed to the scene, accompanied by divisional disaster management officers. After a 30-minute search and rescue operation, the bodies of the three girls were recovered.
The statement added that the girls’ bodies were immediately taken to the nearest health center in the area, where they were pronounced dead. An investigation revealed that the deceased had cut grass at the same place where they drowned. The remains of the girls were handed over to their parents, who buried them according to Islamic rites.
The NSCDC Commandant in Jigawa State, Mr. Muhammad Danjuma, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and advised parents to be more vigilant and monitor their children’s activities, especially during flooded periods.
