Nigeria’s NNPC Demands Suspension of Mele Kyari Amidst Fuel Crisis

NNPC Chief Under Fire: Conference of Nigerian Political Parties Demands Suspension and Probe

The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has called for the immediate suspension of Mele Kyari, the managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), following recent controversy surrounding the corporation. In a statement, the CNPP also demanded a probe into alleged subsidy scam, substandard imports, and mismanagement of the Port Harcourt refinery.

According to the statement, the NNPC should be held accountable for the economic hardship caused by the removal of fuel subsidy, which has plunged Nigerians into immense hardship. The recent pump price hike from N167 to about N700 per litre under the guise of endless subsidy removal has not alleviated the nationwide shortage of petrol, causing citizens to suffer even more.

The CNPP criticized Mele Kyari’s leadership, saying it has been marked by controversy and failure, and that his inability to address these issues makes him unfit to continue in his role. The group also highlighted the alleged importation of substandard petroleum products, which it said pose a significant risk to the health and safety of Nigerians.

Furthermore, the CNPP expressed concern over the endless rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt Refinery, despite huge sums of money already spent, and described it as another testament to the mismanagement and inefficiency that plagues NNPC Limited.

The CNPP’s demand for Mele Kyari’s suspension and a probe into the alleged subsidy scam, substandard imports, and mismanagement of the Port Harcourt refinery has raised questions about the leadership of the NNPC and its accountability to the Nigerian people.

It remains to be seen whether the NNPC will heed the CNPP’s call for accountability and transparency in its operations. For now, the controversy surrounding the corporation continues to dominate the headlines in Nigeria.
